Varicose veins are a common vascular condition that occurs when the valves within the veins become weakened or damaged, causing blood to pool and the veins to enlarge and become twisted. They most frequently develop in the legs and may cause symptoms such as aching, heaviness, swelling, cramps, and skin changes.
Although varicose veins are often considered a cosmetic issue, they may also indicate underlying chronic venous disease. Without appropriate evaluation and treatment, the condition can progress and increase the risk of complications such as chronic venous insufficiency, skin ulcers, superficial thrombophlebitis, or bleeding in some patients. Treatment options are selected based on the severity of the condition and the individual patient's needs.
